Diamond Dog Behaviour Consultancy - leading the way through positive change
Frequently asked questions

What happens at the home consultation?

I will assess the dogs behaviour, history and your expectations. We will then construct a programme or intervention at the time demonstrating specific teachings and techniques. The session can last up to 2 hours.

What happens after the consultation?

Within a few days you will receive an in depth Psychological Report and Behaviour Modification Programme which will detail all we have discussed and need to implement. Further telephone and email support is available at no further charge

Why a dog psychologist?

There is a proliferation of dog trainers and counsellors using psychological techniques with no training or qualifications in psychology. This is unethical and potentially dangerous. Compare it to your dog being treat by a 'vet' with no qualifications in veterinary medicine. You just wouldn't allow it to happen.

Does it matter what age the dog is?

No. A proven behaviour modification or intervention programme will work with any age.

How long does it take for the behaviour to change?

It depends on a number of variables. The dogs individuality,  its genetic predisposition and consistent application from all those involved. No magic wands, but scientifically proven methodology will optimise the chance of success, not half baked unproven 'theories'. Change usually takes place within a matter of weeks and over months.

Why doesn't my dog behave like I want it to?

Dogs are predators, they are also argumentative. They want to mark territory, they want to chew everything.  They want to sniff anything new and they are not particularly bothered where they go to the toilet (though not in their bed)They then want to mate. They will chase prey. Your dog is hardwired to do all of these. They don't have a problem with any of the above, only us humans find these behaviours difficult and embarrassing. Dogs are also great learners which is precisely why their behaviour can be modified.

What are aversive s?

Methods such as nipping the dogs ear, using choke collars, kicking, striking with the hand or any form of punishment. You may have seen these 'techniques' dressed up as something else. These methods are morally bankrupt, rely on fear and demonstrate a profound lack of understanding of the psychology of the dog

What is positive reinforcement?

Based on sound psychological principles that have a scientifically proven record, positive reinforcement shapes the dogs behaviour in a humane way. Dogs do this to themselves naturally everyday, which is precisely why it works.

Is the change permanent?

Yes as long as you adhere to the principles within the programme.
